"Compact Now" does not work

By mfernandez ·
I have a large pst file about 600MB that I would like to compact but when I hit the compact button I get a dialog box that says compacting but flashes up for one second and disappears. It doesn't compact my file as if it doesn't need to be compacted. I tried to compact another file thinking it might be my file that may be corrupt but it did the same thing. Is there anything else I can try?

It is compacted already. If you doubt it, move the stuff into a new pst file and check the size on the new pst. Then compact the old.

You have to have deleted e-mail in order for the size of the file to decrease. Moving e-mail to deleted items will not decrease the size; deleting the deleted items and then compacting should decrease the file size.

Also, the file may compact very quickly, depending on whether you have removed 10 MB or more of e-mail versus 1 MB or less.

Also you might want to check your calander in the pst file... often people think their pst file should be much smaller (because there's very little e-mail there), but they have hundreds of calander events still in the pst.

Thank you, this was helpful. I didn't realize you needed to clear out some messages, I mean this makes sense but I thought it would just make the file smaller.

You may have completely compacted your .PST file and you may not have. Outlook has issues with PST files that are over 200mb in size (especially on a network). If you allow your PST file to grow excessively huge (600mb), you're going to run into some serious problems. I would recommend creating multiple PST files and going from there.

Thanks, I have gone ahead and divided them up into multiple PST files by year.
