Comparing 2 Columns in Excel

By rawle ·
I have two rather extensive columns that I need to compare. The list of numbers are different in each column (even by 10 or 15 numbers). I need to compare both columns and have the results of the differences show up in another column. Do I use Vlookup or Advanced Filter? If yes, to either question, which one is easier and how do I get the desired results.

Thank you, I am eternally grateful.

Mary.

Please define compare. If your just trying to find the difference you can use a simple formula. If your trying to find duplicates, the problem is approached in a different manner. Are you looking for an answer for each record or a total for all records? Are you looking for sub totals?

Column 1 and 2 have different numbers -- I need a list of all the numbers that are not included from Column 1 in Column 2.

You can download a free VLOOKUP workbook here:

That's probably the method I would use.

Column 1 has a series of numbers (maybe 1000) and I would like to see what numbers have been excluded or included from Column 2 (which may have 1100 numbers). What is the best approach?
