Complete XP SP2 reinstall needed but Product Key issues

By smile4bonita ·
I was given an old (I do stress old) Dell by my mom and her co-worker. It was getting thrown out by her company and they are the two tech people there. Well as time has gone by I have had lots of problems with it and now I need to wipe it out and reinstall Windows. I currently have XP SP2 on it and 730MB of free hard disk space out of 9.31GB. I can't uninstall software etc. because these files have become corrupt courtesy of a virus. My mom let me borrow a COPY of her XP SP2 cd but there is no product key listed and she didn't have time to find it before she decided to stop talking to me because of a problem she is having with my older sister which adds to my frustration. I located the current product key of the installed OS but it doesn't work with the install cd. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO and my pc is in DESPERATE need of a good cleaning.

Option #2

Go to your local tech shop. Tell them the issues you are having. Most tech shops can reinstall xp from thier disks and should be able to sniff your key. Should cost you about 100 bucks... which you could just as easily spend to get a retail copy of XP.

Retrieve the original product key

by srlowrey In reply to Complete XP SP2 reinstall ...

The copy of Windows XP that came with the Dell computer is supposed to stay with the computer. If you don't have the Authentic Key on the chasis of the pc, you can use RockXP to retrieve the key from the registry.

Download a copy at:
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/it/2006/12/15/rockxp-v40/

I assume you don't have the Original Dell Windows install disk ? or Recovery disks ?

Dell PC + Dell Restore CD = No Product Key Needed

by johnathonpd In reply to Complete XP SP2 reinstall ...

I have seen several people tell Dell PC owners that they need to go purchase a New OS, when all they want to do is format the hard drive and reinstall OS.

Dell will mail you replacement restore discs, both OS and resource disc (drivers) for your Dell PC. Many Dell PC's are eligible for one replacement copy - FREE!

U purchased mine from Dell and it cost me a whopping $15.

Call Dell Tech Support to order your replacement restore discs:

1-800- 624-9896

Right click on MY COMPUTER icon and then hit the "SUPPORT INFORMATION" button on the first tab (GENERAL). Have the "Express Service Code" available for Dell and they'll ID your PC and send you the discs, even if it's an older OS like XP.

No product key is NEEDED for a Dell PC. That product key was ONLY used initially when the PC was first imaged AND is there to show that Dell paid for the license.

Those are the facts, Jack!

1) There is some connection to the version of XP disk and the key so you might need to try an older XP disk eg no service pack or SP1.

2)Try a repair install. Boot to the XP cd, select "install windows" (not the repair option). Windows will then tell you "a windows install exists, do you wish to repair it (or something close to this). Tell it to repair. I don't believe it will ask for a key this way.

Yes it does ask for the Product Key. The only time that the Product Key is not needed is when someone Slipstreams it to the Install Disc like Dell do.

Besides don't you think that this is a little late it was asked on 20 th August 2007?
