BIOS password

by Sue T In reply to computer locked

power on password is a password that is set in the bios. It has nothing to do with the operating system. Did you go into setup (BIOS) and change security settings? When you get this screen did you try pressing enter? If this is a new computer call the company and they should be able to help you over the phone. If this is a desktop computer you can always open it up and move the jumper to reset the bios or you could try just removing the battery for at least 1/2 hour. If someone was on your computer you should first ask them if they made this change and what the password is. I hope this helps.

computer locked

by jdavis1137 In reply to BIOS password

Thank you for getting back on my problem so quickly. I really didn't change anything, i don't know how to go in to BIOS to change anything. My kids and grandkids were here over the holidays, they may have done something. I pressed enter and every other key on the keyboard, nothing happens. It is not a new computer, I have had it several years. It is a desktop, no battery. I think I can figure how to open up the computer, but I don't know what the BIOS looks like or how you move a jumper to reset it. As you can tell I am a newbie. Any help would sure be appreciated as all my income tax info is on that computer, as I was lax in backing up to disc. Thank you

open computer

by Sue T In reply to computer locked

Disconnect the monitor, power from your computer. If you open the computer case you will see a battery on the motherboard. It looks like a battery you would find in a watch, flat and round. Take it out for a half hour or so and then put it back in, reconnect the monitor, power cord, etc. and turn the computer on. Did this fix your problem?

locked computer / lost password

by jdavis1137 In reply to open computer

THANK YOU I folowed your very good instructions and it solved the locked computer problem. I was able to get to the login screen and the computer is working now but I cannot log in under my login name as it says," did you forget your password". I am positve I did not change my password on that computer when I went to my new computer. The password hint is right for the password I had. I can log on as Guest, but of course my files including my income tax files are not in the Guest login and every time I try to do certain things in the Guest log in, it says I can't because I don't have administrative rights for this computer. Is there any way I can recover my lost administrative password or get a new administrative password to be able to log on as the administrator? Otherwise I cannot access my files. You have been very helpful to me and hopefully you have an answer for my latest difficulty. Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it. John
