Configuring a single firewall

By fkuchta ·
I would like to have general infos on how to set up a new firewall for my LAN to access Internet : IP to set on the 2 Ethernet cards, gateway to set on them, where I must set DNS, ... ?
I only need very basic informations. The firewall will be between ADSL connection and my lan. I have a network in 192.168.1.X, a unique PDC on 192.168.1.2 with NT4 (not any BDC), and an ADSL router on 192.168.1.1.
Thank you.

If your router is running NAT (and from your info I would assume that it is) and has the capability for you to configure TCP/IP filters, then you can use it as a firewall. Your internal systems would use the router's internal IP address (192.168.1.1) as the gateway address. Otherwise, you need a different router/firewall, a software firewall product or a proxy server on your LAN. You do not need DNS internally if you're running WINS. You can simply let the router use the ISP's DNS servers. To "harden" your firewall you need to know about TCP/IP filters - this is beyond the scope of answering your question. Hope this helps!
