Configuring two graphics adapters in Lin

By tonyr ·
Is it possible to configure two graphics adapters in Linux? The first one is an on-board VGA chipset and the second is an RG101 PCI graphics adapter.

You can have multiple cards with Linux but it requires a 3rd party X-Server. I use metrolink to run 4-head Matrox Millennium cards on our Linux engineering stations. Running multiple monitors uses a huge amount of memory so don’t get too silly with 32 MB of RAM or anything like that. You can find a list of compatible multi-card-format cards at http://www.metrolink.com/productindex.html

The only problem is that separate cards (your config) vs. multi-head cards is that separate cards are a bit more difficult to work with than multi head cards because you have two separate devices accessing the PCI bus to do the same thing. Resource sharing isn’t a Linux strong point.

Good Luck

This is dependant on how much trouble you want to go to...

I assume you want this config in X windows.
If that's the case you can go over to http://www.XFree86.org and download release 4
after checking if it has the drivers you need.

You canalso uuse the 2.4 kernel that also has multihead support in the kernel. That will require upgradeing quite a few of your other packages.

The final option is to get a commercial xserver like MetroX.
