Contract vs. Per Hour

by serverjockey . Updated 22 years, 1 month ago

Question for all the Consultants running their own full time business. I’ve had some of my clients ask me about support contracts and I told them I would look into them. I guess I’m not sure about them. On one hand it would be nice to know that I’m going to have so much money coming in every month but on the other hand, some months they are so busy I’d be losing money. Is there such a thing as saying x amount of hours per month for so many dollars and anything above that is billable by the hour? But wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of the support contract in the first place? Does anyone else out there have anything setup with their clients in this manner and if so, is it a set price no matter how many hours are spent on-site or is it scalable? The per hour is nice for the months when they have a lot going on but it might be six months that I don’t have any business with them. Maybe it would average itself out. One upside to it that I can think of is that you have a client locked into a support agreement for a year.
