Conversion of character in Office 97

By dave.raj ·
Hello,I have a Word 97 document that was emailed to me from Japan, and I can't read the characters. The characters that are displayed look like small little squares. The operating system on this machine is Windows ME. When I read this document on other machines with Win2k, WinME, Win 95/98 it is ok. So why can't the document display in it's right format on this machine. Can someone pls help.
Kind Regards
Dave

Word 97 uses 16 bit Unicode TTF fonts in
Office97. Many graphics card drivers and some printer drivers don't display them correctly.

try to Boot in Safe Mode.If you can see the charaters, look for new drivers.
Try setting the ME machine to adifferent printer.
Another thing to try is to set the printer to Print Truetype as Graphics.

Have you checked if the correct font is installed, or perhaps the encoding?

For fonts:

On the Select Features screen in the setup program, expand Office Tools, and then expand International Support. Select the item you need, click the arrow next to your selection, and then select Run from My Computer.

For encoding, try this:

On the Tools menu, click Options, then General.

Select the Confirm conversion at Open check box.

Close and then reopen the encoded file.

In the Convert File dialog box, select Encoded Text.

In the File Conversion dialog box, select Other encoding, and then select the encoding standard you want in the list.
You can preview the text in the Preview area to check whether it makes sense in the encoding standard you selected. (If the Preview area is not visible, click Show Preview.)

You may want to uncheck the 'confirm conversion' box when you are finished.

Hope that helps,

Rita
