Converting from FAT32 to FAT16 in WIN 98

By ideafixer ·
I need to convert my file system from FAT32 to FAT16 so I can partition my hard drive in order to install Windows NT server 4.0. I am currently running WIN98 SE on a none partitioned drive. I want to install NT server to run SQL Server on the separate partition. I downloaded partition magic (evaluation version) and the option to convert to fat16 is not available. Is there any utility (preferably free) that will allow me to convert my file allocation table? I need the FAT system in order tohave NT.. Please advise,

Rob

Converting from FAT32 to FAT16 in WIN 98

Since you already have downloaded the eval version of partition magic, I suggest to spend on the full version since you may need it every now and then. Besides, partition magic is a good product.

If you dont want to spend, then I guess you only way is to wipe out your current partition and have the DOS disk partition your drive into two: one with FAT16 and leave the other free for the NTFS (when you install NT).

If you plan to dual boot, then install first WIN9x and then NT next.

Hope this helps

If wipe out the current partition will I lose all the data I have on it? I think that I will but have never tried that. What about installing Windows 98 again over top of the current windows? Will I have the option to change the file system during the install? I read that if I have a duel operating systems with WIN98 and NT that I have to have FAT. I cannot have FAT32 and NTFS. When I say duel operating systems I mean the option to choose what operating system at start up.

You dont have to convert to FAT 16 if you use Partition Magic. You can use the Boot Magic program that comes with Partition Magic.
That will let you hide the FAT 32 Partition from WINNT when you boot to winnt. Of cource if you want to be able to access the partition from within WINNT you will not be able since its FAT 32.

There is no way from downgrading FAT32 to FAT unless you use Partition Magic. Another option, that should work is to rename the windows directory to say WINOLD. Then install Win95(FAT). U can now install Winnt in a diff partition. When u go to reload 98 it will ask if u wanna keep existing file system. Say yes and u shud be OK. Hope it helps.
Or get a crack for PM ... mail me if u need one.

Partition Commander v6.0 allows conversion from FAT32 to FAT16 and is not as expensive as Partition Magic. It also gives you flexibility with NTFS partitions and resizing. It comes with it's own boot disk and allows you to work outside of the OS onyour drive. This version also has a Backstep Wizard if you screw up. I've used it on multiple platforms and the only thing I couldn't do was change NTFS of FAT16 on a primary, active partition running winnt 4.0.
