Converting vinyl and music tapes to mp3

I'm trying to convert my record and tape collection to mp3 and am using Easy CD Creator (Roxio) 5 and a pc with WinXP, turntable, amp and double tape deck. I have wired up the hi fi to the pc as per the instructions that came with the software but when I try to record tape or vinyl the resulting mp3 file is just static. I have tried different configurations but always get the same result. I am not sure of the make of the sound card but changing this is the last of my options I think. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks

First, you do want a good sound card to make good recordings.

One of the better general purpose sound cards is the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

Next, double check your connections:

Turntable into phono preamp, or phone input of a receiver.
Either tape or line out jacks from the preamp connect to the input on the sound card.

You could directly connect from the output jacks on the tape deck to the sound card for copying the tapes.
