copying files from one server to another

By techgirl75 ·
We have recently built a new NT4 server to replace our old one. We have incorporated larger drives into this server. We would like to copy data from the old drives to their new designated locations on the new drives over the network. Will it be okay that the partitions on new server are not the same and are not named the same as the old? Any tips on this? Thank you.

It will be fine insofar as you can copy the data files to their new locations and they can be accessed from there. Apps of course will need to be reinstalled.

Where you will need to pay attention is your permissions will not migrate with the files. Additionally, you will need to recreate shares and mappings. If you are using logon scripts pointing to the old system to create paths, you will also need to update them to point to the new server and its partitions/shares.

None of this is difficult, it is just a great deal of logistical work. Be careful, document the important aspects and then move the files, permissions, etc. You can leave the first server online while you are configuring the new box. Then begin the testing by moving a few selected users. The goal is to transition with the least impact on your users.

Good luck!
