corrupted file in word

By vibhavarij ·
While working in Word 2000, if the computer gets hang the file remains open. We will have to restart the PC. The file gets corrupted since it was open. Further we could not open the file or open it as Read Only. We are not able to modify or rename it.

What to do in this case.

Word creates temporary files when a document is opened. They start with a tilde (~). Delete all ~*.* files and see if that helps.
You might also rename/delete Normal.dot

When you open the document, simply copy and paste into a new document. When this happen to me, that is what I do and it works just fine.

Close MS Word 2000. Do a find or search on the C: drive for a file called: normal.dot. Rename the file: new.dot and reopen Ms Word.
