    CPU FSB higher than motherboard

    Locked

    by chrmassey ·

I’m looking at upgrading my processor from a 2.4GHz dual core to a 2.5GHz quad core. Only problem is is that my motherboard only supports front side bus speeds up to 1066MHz, and the processor is 1333MHz. Will the cpu work with the motherboard? also, can I increase the motherboards speed by overclocking so my CPU can operate at the required speed, and if so, how can i do this?

my motherboard is a BIOSTAR TForceP965 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard. The newegg link is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138039.

the cpu im looking at is Intel? Core? 2 Quad Processor Q9300 OEM. The frys link is http://shop2.frys.com/product/5513390?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG.

thanks for any and all help in advance.

As ROBO_DEV found, you may be able to update your BIOS and be able to support the new CPU.

However, if there is any reason that the BIOS update is not for your motherboard, you typically cannot overclock the FSB. At least not enough to boost things up for the faster CPU.

Another thing you need to look at is the speed of your RAM. Slow RAM may limit your FSB speed choices. At a minimum, slow RAM will prevent you from getting the full benefit of the faster CPU.

There was a time when you could under-clock a CPU and it would work fine. Most of the current CPUs do not even POST if they are under-clocked.
