CPU seems rather hot!

By daveyboy82 ·
Hi guys,

I just replaced a mobo that was faulty after a power surge. I put in the processor using thermal paste, turned on the comp, went into the BIOS and the cpu temp quickly goes from 70 to sitting around 80. 80 Seems rather hot to me! I did notice the Core Voltage changes from between 1.3 - 1.4 volts. It doesnt stay steady like on my machine.

Is 80 degrees C hot for a p4 3.0 Ghz?

Apparently they can run up to 10 degrees hotter than a normal CPU. I think that you are going to have to get a better Heatsink and CPU Fan. It must have been running hot before.

While 80C is on the hot side of things

I would be looking at the Power Supply if the Core Voltage is moving around. If that is wrong it will make the CPU run hotter than it should.

I normally see about 75 C under load on one of these CPU's and that is what it stays at. Try a better Heat Sink/Fan or look carefully at the PS or M'Boards Voltage Regulation either may be bad causing the problem.

Found the prob...

Yeh at first i tried the old power supply which suffered the power surge. While it worked the temp skyrocketed to nearly 90 while the core voltage was not stable.

But the real problem was.. one of the clips on the heatsink wasnt clipped in. Haha noob mistake i know but i really had 2 push it down to clip it in. Now it runs quite nicely at around 50 degrees.

Funny how it runs so hot compared to mine which runs at like about 30 and the critcal temp is 65. Damn pentiums ;-)
