Critique of private web site, please.

By CharlieSpencer ·
Hey, y'all! Any suggestions on how to improve the readability or layout of this site? I'm primarily concerned with the page below; any of the linked pages are of secondary concern.

I'm not concerned with passing W3C tests or the cleanliness of the HTML. The audience for this site is less than 30 people, and all can display the current version of this home page without any problem.

Thanks in advance.

Edited - and I already intend to lose the 'checkerboard slide' effect when the page loads.

Well, for me...

by Fregeus In reply to Critique of private web s ...

...I think there is too much color. Either make the background different colors but keep the fonts the same or the other way around.

Make sure all square are aligned perfectly and maybe put more room in between them.

A table look might work better than all theses squares everywhere.

Just my 2 cents.

About the colors

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Well, for me...

This site is the home page of a fantasy league. The garish squares in the middle each represent a player, and he or she chooses his or her own background and font colors.

I'm responsible for the light blue, light green, and light red across the top and left.

I'll clean up the 'fit and finish' issues regarding the alignments.

I'll make a note to look at a table during the 'off season' (Dec, Jan, Feb). I actually had a table in a version many years ago but didn't like it. I use a WYSIWYG utility to create this, and I don't remember how much control I have over table elements.

too much color...looks too busy...personally speaking, i would have just used a table/s in word and then highlighted each cell, row, or column to suit

I can see why you used the colors, as they seem to be the "team" colors. However, it is a bit "busy".

Is there a way you could go with plain font, but make a smaller "flag" with the colors on it to the left of the font? Sort of like a custom bullet point?

Right, team colors.

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Colors

The idea of a colored bullet beside a team's name is worth looking into. That may be another off-season project.

Ditto the others.

Too busy. Too much color. Not enough white space.

White space

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Ditto the others.

Yeah, I've been trying to minimize scrolling. Would you add more space between the rows, the columns, or both?

edited - Both.

by boxfiddler Moderator In reply to White space

Not a lot, mind you. Just enough to 'tame' the color.

I think you could shrink the font size in the color boxes somewhat, too. Also, it looks like you have two different font sizes in those boxes. Changing font size so they're all the same size would be good. That would help reduce the 'busy' feel of it.

Different font sizes - Edited.

by CharlieSpencer In reply to edited - Both.

The larger font is the 'default'; I use the smaller one if the team name is too long to fit in the square using the larger font. I'll switch to one size and see how it looks.

Edited - Based on the feedback so far, it sounds nobody favors making the colored squares larger to allow the larger sized font to be used across the board.

What's with the black lines May 16, July 10...etc. ?

by Darryl~ Moderator In reply to Critique of private web s ...

Like the others said....the colors are pretty hard to look at.

What about making the "race summaries" smaller....may not even need the box they're in....maybe left justify them instead of centered....that might make them look a little neater.

You have March 7th as no race....but have #4 Alanta March 7th - do the "no race" bars have to go right across or could they just be listed with the summaries.

Just a few thoughts.
