Cryptic BSD error message...

By patrissatech ·
While attempting to access the Startup and Recovery settings for the system properties for my PC (dualboot Win98/2KServer) a blue screen of death appeared stating: "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Address 8042d8f5 base at 80400000, DataStamp 3d366b8b - ntoskrnl.exe". Upon rebooting the system everything seems to be working fine with the execption of the data that was lost when the system crashed. I haven't installed anything recently except for "updated" drivers for a USB mouse/keyboard about a month ago. The drivers were immediately removed because they caused the system to crash during bootup. How do I read (understand) this new error message in order to resolve it?

Are you using an ATI video card?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285014

The above basically states to contact the manufacturer about updated DirectX compatible drivers.

There are a lot of articles with the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error that you are getting on the MS Knowledgebase site.

Its not necessarily video related.

e.g. "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160285" talks about an almost identical error, but its related to InocuLAN virus software.

just do a search on search.microsoft.com but include the "STOP" part of the error as well.

e.g. "STOP 0x0000000A (0x00000001, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8010D8C5)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Address 8010D8C5 has base at 80100000
NTOSKRNL.EXE
"

you should find something...alternatively, if you know how to read a dump file... =)
