Data, but no music from USB cd-rom

A USB cd-rom supplies data but not music to a ThinkPad.
1) Store bought audio CD
2) Boot and program sounds heard OK
3) WMP starts normally when cd inserted
4) Speaker in systray – not muted
5) Double-click speaker icon, nothing muted
6) You can hear music playing if you plug a headset into the cd-rom port
7) Audio enabled in BIOS
8) Still no music when speakers plugged into TP

Any ideas?
