Dates in Excel 2007 data source are transposed in a mail merge to Word.

In New Zealand we use dd/MM/yy format for dates, and I have changed my Control Panel short date so that it looks like that. However, when trying to do a patient label mail merge using Word 2007 and Excel 2007, all the birthdates which have been entered correctly in Excel switch to mm/dd/yy in the mail merge. How can I fix the date in Excel so it doesn’t change? Have tried formatting it as Text, General, but no good. Or what can I do with the DOB mail merge field?
Thanks for any help you can give.
