DC migration to new hardware

By jim ·
I have a DC running on some old hardware that needs to be put onto a new machine. W2k sp3. We have another DC that has the global cat on it so this is what I'd refer to as a BDC in the old days.
There's a product by Symantec that looks good but I am putting out feelers for the best low cost low headache method of migrating the DC onto new hardware. We will eventually go to w2k3 but I'd rather keep it as w2k for now.

Do you use DHCP in your environment? If so i Would do this.

1. setup new box add it to domain.
2. run dcpromo and make it a DC
3. Allow AD and DNS to replicate
4. Transfer FSMO roles from old svr to new svr.
5. unplug dc1, the new dc should take over. if it continues to work for another week or so I would run dcpromo on the old box and remove the DC credentials.
