Defrag locks-up in Win98

By scanpos ·
I have an installation where the PC locks up everytime Win98's Defrag is run. Diskeeper trial version works fine. I have reloaded the Win98 O/S and the problem has returned. I can't find a way to reload only the defrag application and I have not found any other reports of this failure in any of the technical web sites. I hope that someone here can help shed some light on this issue. Your help is greatly appreciated

1. Too much stuff running in the background, use msconfig to disable the stuff.
OR
2. Your CPU is getting too hot.
OR
3. Your RAM is dying, try swapping it out.

Hope that helps.

There is an application or a combination of applications running that is causing the lockup. Removing all of the apps one-by-one lead to the solution.

Thanks

Hi you mightt try going to safe mode and run scan disc first then run defrag. It's best way to find out if there is soft ware problem or if it's hardware. rockyolson@charter.net

Try using Norton Speed Disk instead. It is fast and easy to use, and in a way better than windows defrag. I'm quite sure that using this program can solve the problem.
Hope this works, Maozy.

If another application tries to read/write on the harddisk while Defrag is running it is going to lock up . I suggest that you close all running tasks , right click all icons showing on the tool bar and close/exit them .Then run defrag . Also if youare using insufficient RAM then chances are that swapping occurs while defrag is running , which causes it to hang , you can solve this by adding more RAM .

Good Luck !!!!!

All running programs should have End Task or Disable applied to avoid interference with Scan-Clean-Defrag. To do this:
Put computer screen to Desktop. Press Ctrl+Alt keys and tap Delete key once. (C-A-D). A Close box will open with list of programs.
Highlight the uppermost program that is NOT Explorer or Systray. Explorer and Systray are to remain untouched. Then click the End Task button. The Close box will disappear. Now do your C-A-D again, highlighting next program, and go to End Task and click.
At times a program will not remove itself and you will have to highlight/End Task twice, or a second box appears with an End Task button that you click on.
After Deleting all programs, except Explorer and Systray, go to your System Tray (lower right, by clock) and click on any Icons to open their Disabling features. Then, still on Desktop, Right click>properties>Screen Saver tab, place your Screen Saver on none, click Apply and OK. On same tab click Settings button to go to Power Mgt and place the settings on Always, Never, Never, Never, click Apply/OK.
There is a Program called Enditall that aids the Ending/Disabling of most of your Programs. See www.zdnet.com. In Zdnet?s search box, type in Enditall (one word). If you install Enditall you may still have a program or two in your System Tray that requires individual Disabling. After S-C-D is complete, Reboot your computer and programs will return. Reset your Screen Saver and Power Mgt
