Defrag problem XP Home

By edward.j.obrien ·
My daughter delivered her laptop to me (Dell Inspiron 1300) and asked if I could fix her defrag.

Well, I can't...

Defrag, when launched, shows up but does not display either "Estimated useage..." data. Both panels remain blank.

In Task Manager Defrag is shown as 'Running'.

Has anyone had this problem and knows how to fix it?

What % free space is left on the HDD? ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Defrag problem XP Home

Sometimes if the HDD is chock-full, the defrag utility becomes overloaded and cannot display any GUI until some space has been freed up.

I had the reply window open. Honest.
It's good to see that we both went the same direction.

To make use of a third party Defrag Utility, just to make sure.

I suggest you make use of the 30-Day free trial of PerfectDisk:

I've been using PerfectDisk for many years now and have never had anything but complete satisfaction from it.

I'm NOT touting it - just recommending it!

How much free space do you have?

by Ron K. In reply to Defrag problem XP Home

The only times I've had problems with Defrag were when the hard drive was about out of room. I believe that Defrag requires around 10% free space to run.
Here is another page that may help.
