delayed email delivery for laptop users

By tlowner ·
I'm running Exchange 5.5 sp4 on a nt 4.0 server sp6. I'm using outlook 2000 on my laptops running nt4.0 sp6a. Numerous users don't get email into there inbox unless they read a message or move a message into another folder. After reading or moving there here the sound stating mail has been delivered. This problem only occurs on laptop users not desktops users. There could be messages from two hours earlier. Mail is not being sent with a delay. Any Ideas?

Because these are laptops, I suspect they may be configured to store mail in personal folders. As such, when they connect to the network they are not synchronizing with Exchange until they actually accesses an Exchange resource. In Outook, under Tools -> Services - Delivery tab, is mail being delivered to the Exchange mailbox or to Personal Folders? Your best bet is to choose to deliver mail to the Exchange mailbox, and then use Offline folders that synchronize upon exiting Outlook. This optionwill immediately connect them to the Exchange server when they connect to the LAN, yet make their email available to them when they are not on the LAN.

We don't have personal folders enabled for the users. We are using the mailbox feature.
