Deleting Icon in Windows. hehe

By qhcomputingny ·
I know the topic sounded really simple to do and it may still be, but I have had the hardest time trying to get this icon off of my screen. I recently uninstalled Gateway Internet Service off of my computer and yet the icon still remains. I try and click on the icon, and of course it highlights it, but if I right click it and try to delete it it will not let me delete it. It does not give any kind of error message, it just closes that little (right-click) screen that pops up like nothing ever happened. I even tried to see if I could go into properties and change it from a read only file if that was the case and it still would not let me. There were no properties settings, and the file says that it is 0 bytes in length, which means it shouldn't be there in the first place. I now feel stuck because as a tech I should be able to delete a damn icon. :) Well if anyone can help me with this i would appreciate it. I don't think I am forgetting anything.. Troubleshoot people. :) ---Eddie----

Run Regedit. Go to : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

Look through the sub-keys until you find the one whose default value is the icon to be deleted (names may look different than what's on the Icon itself). Delete that sub-key and the Icon should not reappear.

Dos is gonna be the key here...if the other guy's registry hack doesn't work...reboot to dos and do it the old fashioned way.

the way you sounded, you sound like you'll know dos...but in case anyone else is reading this and wants to know:
1. Start | Shutdown...choose to restart in msdos mode;
2. at the c:\windows> prompt...type cd desktop;
3. then try to delete it using this command:
-del filena~1.lnk (substituting "filena" with the first 6 characters of the icon name)

if you still are having issues deleting it...try to remove the attributes to it:
1. type: attrib filena~1.lnk -s-h-r

then try to delete it....if your still having problems...try it in safe mode, then format (if it don't work)

as a Gateway Tech (I'm at work right now)...I've gotta say
Gateway.Net Sucks!!!

hope it helps,
Joel

If you are still tackling this problem, perhaps you should consider calling your local super-hero.
