First off, technical questions such as this belong in the Technical Q&A section.

Second, it is very difficult to get the full specifications of a Dell system without the system serial number.
Dell makes a number of different configurations under each basic model number.
The big question here, is what chip-set is on the motherboard, and what Front Side Bus speeds does the motherboard support?

Looking at the Pentium 4 matrix at Intel's web site:

My first thought is that the newer CPU will not work with your motherboard.

If you do happen to have a motherboard that does support the 800MHz FSB for the new CPU, you may need to replace your RAM in order to get the speed necessary.

Still, my gut feeling is that you need a CPU with a 400MHz or 533MHz FSB. This limits your system to 2.8GHz.

Service Tag

There should be a 'service tag' number on the side of the chassis...use it on Dells Web site & it will give you upgrade paths for your system.
