Demoting an AD server

I am cuurently having problem demoting a server I joined to the domain just 2 days back. it gives me the error “The Directory service failed to replicate off changes made locally. The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure” i have checked my DNS to make sure it was pointing to myself and that the zone was AD integrated. now all I want to do is to remove this server and reformat it. there is currently one other AD server in my domain. Can anyone please tell me if it is safe for me to delete this DC from the domain and just reformat.

Or is there a more tedious way to manually do what the DCPromo does.
