Desktop icons lockup when IE closes

By obrti01 ·
I recently loaded the IE9 beta on my Win7-64bit Dell machine and mostly liked it except for one nagging thing. When I close IE, the desktop locks up. Can't right click the desktop and can't activate programs using desktop icons. So, I uninstalled IE9 and went back to IE8. Problem is, the problem stayed. Does anyone know how to get this working correctly again?

If you read the M$ Warnings about their Beta Products

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Desktop icons lockup when ...

They warn that things like this may happen so they advise you not to place any Beta Product onto a Mission Critical Box.

It's perfectly normal that a problem with a Beta Product may remain after it is uninstalled as well so you need to be very careful. You should report this issue to M$ along with the OS and Software Load in use here so that they can fix it before IE9 goes RTM.

As for fixing this the Old Standard of reinstalling the OS and resetting your entire system is always the best way forward but as you have some form of 7 you can try Repairing it, It may or may not fix the current problem.

Problem resolved

Short of a way to fix this, I did a system restore to a day before I installed IE9. This sort of solution doesn't always work for such things, but in this case it did.
