Dial up Networking

By jlsgirl ·
I am having a lot of trouble getting my pc to open web pages once I dial up my isp. I get connected fine but can't download any pages. I have uninstalled and reinstalled tcp/ip, dial up networking and have even followed the directions on microsoft'sweb site for deleting and reinstalling tcp and dial up and still I can't get the pages to load. I get a connection but then I receive the message the page cannot be displayed and refresh just doesn't do anything. Any ideas??

Have you tried PINGing from the command prompt?

Have you double-checked your ISP's DUN settings: gateway, IP address, logon, ...?

I've tried all of the above and the everything works but the actual downloading of the page. I have also been working with my isp for the last 2 weeks trying to figure it out. They thought that following Mirosoft's fix would work but I got the same results after all the deleting and reinstalling of winsock files.

You mention that you have worked with your ISP on this so you have probably made sure that the DNS settings are correct.

However, your problem smacks of DNS trouble. Try using a different DNS server.

Try to open http://208.50.157.239 or http://195.44.254.18 on the bad machine. If it gets to a real page then your problem is DNS.

If not then please post the details of you operating system: Major version (95/98/NT/2000) and minor version (950a/SE/SP4) etc.

I wasn't getting anywhere with the software so I decided to change the modem. It worked for a while but now the pages will lock up. I have recently downloaded netzero and have not had any problems. I actually think it may even have something to do with the access numbers of the ISP. Thanks

If you are using NT, do not use any domain name when establishing the connection.
On 98 or NT uncheck Required encrypted password (select option for accepting only TEXT passwords on NT).
