Dial up speed vs Port speed?

By corey ·
Why do some PC machines report fairly accurate dial up connection speeds and other seem to report only the port speed set by the user? Does it have to do with the modem or the BIOS? Any info on this burning question is greatly appreciated.

This is something controlled yb the init string. Not knowing what kind of modem we're dealing with here, this could be few different things, but you shouuld be able to find this in the manaual as to what to string to use to force the connected speed instead of the port speed.

I think it has to do with the modem driver, and how specific and correct it is for the modem in use.

Either way though, its not terribly accurate. At least it tells you what your connect speed was. But after that initial connection, analog speeds fluctuate greatly.

I remember from my PC tech days though, computer lay persons insisting vehemently they "always get 57.6kbps!", a complete impossibility of course.

I agree with answer two, I would say that it has something to do with the modem drivers.
The speed of the connection may be dictated by the speed of the analog wiring used by the phone company as well, most analog connections usually top out somewhere around 30K.

There are two speeds involved. The port speed should be set to the maximum allowed by the system, and can be set in the control panel - system - devices manager - ports sequence. The modem speed can be set in the control panel - modems - propertiessequence.
they may be the same speed, or not, depending upon whether or not the modem is external or internal. The software which is controlling the modem is the one which is giving your speed information. It may display this as Kbytes or kbits, or bytes, or bits. The reported speed will be a function of the modem and the communication software, which may have many different internal settings, along with the hardware and software at the other end, which of course may vary.
