Dialup Connection via OUTLOOK and WinXP

By lmayeda ·
I am having problems connecting to an email server via dialup connection using Outlook on a WinXP laptop. The dialup connects to AOL, Internet Explorer. When configuring OUTLOOK to Always dial the connection...OUTLOOK then dials AOL, and presents awindow that says that a connection is already established ... if I select "Try to locate the server on the current connection" I can then send/read mail. In an attempt to get rid of this "extra" step, I selected, "Locate the server on the current connection" and checked the box "don't warn me again". Now, OUTLOOK cannot connect to the mail server. Note: AOL's Read/Write mail works fine, but since this is a business machine, I would like to use our existing mail servers. I have resorted tousing Outlook Express, but since the CEO is used to using OUTLOOK, I would like to be able to get it to work.

Dialup Connection via OUTLOOK and WinXP

by Pan 13 x In reply to Dialup Connection via OUT ...

you have a few choices to go with.
setup and vpn/ras server. dailup to the internet, connect to the ras server then use outlook. this is the best solutionout there for laptops in a business.
second is to setup outlook the same way you did outlook express but use the internet mail configuration. Again this is not how I would do it but it will work.
Remove that find server option and set outlook to never dail a connection. This applies to either option you go with. A vpn server is not hard to setup and can be done on the exchange server itself.
I will provide instructions if needed.

Hope this helps you go in the right direction.

Dialup Connection via OUTLOOK and WinXP

Sorry for the delay ... forgot the problem until the boss had to make another trip. I opted for picking up mail by accessing the a webmail function offered by the ISP via the internet explorer. Forfuture trips, however, I believe I will setup the terminal services client on the laptop and have the user access OUTLOOK on the server for his mail. Thanks for the help

Dialup Connection via OUTLOOK and WinXP

This from the Knowledgebase. Type the Q number in the search box at support.microsoft.com.

"Outlook supports all popular Internet e-mail protocols. This allows Outlook
users to send and receive messages with almost all Internet service providers
(ISP). In addition, Outlook supports many proprietary client and server e-mail
protocols that allow Outlook users to communicate with e-mail servers or
services that do not support standard Internet protocols.

America Online (AOL) uses such aproprietary protocol to communicate between the
user and the AOL service. Microsoft has participated in several meetings with
AOL to discuss ways to provide AOL message functionality to Outlook users,
either through a standard protocol or throughan interface to their proprietary
protocol. Microsoft has offered to help develop the software necessary to
provide AOL connectivity if AOL will provide the needed technical information.
AOL has decided not to provide this functionality to their users, either
directly or by providing the information necessary for Microsoft to do so.

AOL has indicated their decision is based on the following two factors:

- It does not fit the AOL business plans for their users to use non-AOL
software to connect to their service.

- AOL says they have not received enough feedback from customers requesting
this capability to justify providing it to their customers.

If this is a feature that you would like to see made available by AOL, you can
provide that information to AOL at the following AOL Web site:

http://www.aol.com/info/feedback.html"

Thanks, I had known that AOL does not support Outlook but since I did have it working sporadically, I'd hoped to make it work consistently. Thanks ... I sent a message to AOL. I've been told that other nationwide ISPs do offer an interface with Outlook/Outlook Express and may pursue that too.
