Dimming Printer Preferences on Windows XP Home

By Garv-Jones ·
I am sharing a HP Officejet d135 multifunctional printer that is attached to my son's desktop (via parallel cable) on my personal wireless network. I am using the HP Photo Printing software that came with the printer. The desktop is running Windows XP Home Edition, while my company's laptop is running Windows XP Professional Edition. Since, the color ink is so expensive, I would like to enforce some restrictions on printing - besides grounding my son (he has USER rights only) - for using up the color ink.

I have already set the default printing preferences to black ink, but - as you know - they can be changed by any user. In other words, I would like to "dim" the preferences commands that gives ANY USER the ability to print in either black or in color while I (with ADMIN rights) maintain the right to choose between the two.

1. I am not using a print server, and
2. this desktop is not running Windows XP Professional

How could this be accomplished?

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Look for another BW driver.

by tbragsda In reply to Dimming Printer Preferenc ...

You may be able to find a BW driver that will work well with the printer. Your son would only have the BW driver installed, you the color.

Now on the other hand, I think telling your son to use color only when needed should be enough. I tell my users to... forget that, my users never do anything unless they are forced to. :)

Driving for Drivers

by Garv-Jones In reply to Look for another BW drive ...

Thank you for the info. I guess the first place to find the BW driver would be contacting HP. Glad you understand that asking someone to do something - and getting them to do it - is two different things! If you happen to have an alternative fix, please let me know.
