Directory Service Mailbox /Exchange 5.5

By Techdog ·
How do open the "Directory Service" mailbox under the private store container to view/delete items when it is not associated with a "recipient" to be able to give rights to the admin account? The mailbox size was growing steadily and we couldn't figure out why until we stopped the size warnings. Once we did that it stopped growing, but we can't get in to delete anything and it's at 800MB!!! Help!

Sounds like you had problems with Intersite Directory Replication.

Here?s how you can access the mailbox.

1. Open the Administrator program in raw mode, using the /r switch (admin.exe /r).

2. Under Configuration\ Servers\yourserver\ Private Information Store\ Mailbox Resources, select the Directory Service mailbox.

3. From the File menu, select Raw Properties?

4. In the raw properties for the Directory Service object, in the List Attributes Of Type box, select Optional.

5. Goto the Obj-Dist-Name attribute, then select and copy (CTRL + C) the value.

6. Go to the Display Name attribute and paste (CTRL + V) into the Edit Value field. Click on the Set button to set the attribute and then click OK.

Now, create an Outlook profile and paste (CTRL+V) the value you copied from the raw properties as the mailbox name. The mailbox will open and you can clean it out.

CORRECTION: DO NOT USE OUTLOOK! I'm told that this creates folders that can screw the service up! Either use an old Exchange client or Mdbvu32.exe.

Here's how to run mdbvu32.exe:

1. Run Mdbvu32.exe from Server\Support\Utils on the Exchange Server 5.5 CD. Click on OK in the first dialog box to log in.

2. In the MAPILogonEx (MAPI_LOGON_UI) dialog box, select the following check boxes: MAPI_NEW_SESSION, MAPI_EXPLICIT_PROFILE and MAPI_NO_MAIL. Click OK.

3. In the Choose Profile dialog box, select the Directory Service Mailbox profile and click OK.

4. From the MDB Viewer Test Application window, pull down the MDB menu and select OpenMessageStore.

5. In the Select Message Store To Open dialog box, select the Directory Service mailbox and click Open.

6. From the MDB Viewer Test Application, pull down the MDB menu and select Open Root Folder.

7. In the MAPI_FOLDER ? Root dialog box, double click Top of Information Store in the Child Folders box.

8. The MAPI_FOLDER - Inbox dialog box appears. Messages stuck in the directory service mailbox display in the Messages In Folder box.

9. Select the messages you wish to delete.

10. From the Operations Available pull-down, select IpFld -> DeleteMessages.

11. Click Call Function, then click OK in the MAPI_INBOX -> DeleteMessage dialog box to delete the selected messages.

12. After you delete all the messages and there are no replication messages in the Inbox, click Close three times to return to the MDB Viewer Test Application window.

13. On the Session menu, click Session Logoff, click OK in the "IpMDB->StoreLogoff()" dialog box, and exit theapplication.
