By bmoore ·
In our facility, we have pc's strictly for searching our database system located in house on a server. I want those computers to only be able to have access to the db, how do I disable internet explorer or the browser?

Disable Internet Explorer

Look up Group Policy on Microsoft's website.

You can pretty much disable everything using Group Policies, but you do not say what operating system you are using.

Group Policy works best with NT and above as with 9x there are ways around the restrictions.

Good answer but instead of worrying about Operating System versions, group policies, etc. Just setup a private INTRANET seqment on your LAN. This way you don't have to worry about OS levels, someone bringing in disks to load alternate browsers, the use of FTP, etc. The IP addresses of the intranet seqment are not valid on the internet so no one can access, period.

Remove the default gateway in the TCP/IP settings on those PC's and they will not be able to get out on the Internet using anything.

Go to

www.zisman.ca/poledit/
to get Policy Editor for '98. This is a Microsoft tool that will allow you to configure the OS to fit your needs. I haven't used this tool lately, but the site has a lot of info.

Cheers
