DISK SPACE MANAGEMENT ON EXCH 5.5

I have an exhange server thats running out of disk space.I do not have enough space on my other
drive. I tried cleaning several mail boxes,but still could not see the difference in disk space.
Is there any synchronization thats required to make the change in the private.edb file?
