displays wrong number of messages

By Jamie Schnabel ·
Outlook 2000 displays that you have x number of new email messages when you really don't have any. You try to scroll down and nothing there. It almost looks like the number of new messages is the amount of messages in your inbox. this started happening last week. windows 200 stations with full patches. Ran detect and repair. it fixed for 1 day. exchange 2003. any suggestions

well, you have proved phantom stuff in mailboxes is sign of corrupted mailbox(es). (because repair fixed it)
not sure if you are saying all patched 2k wkstns are affected? makes a big difference in t-shooting approach...(btw, if all my newly patched boxes suddenly started doing this i would be on the phone to MS immediately while emailing them simultaneously) after i attempted to roll back the updates on one pc to hopefully fix it. anybody NOT showing the problem? what's difference about them?
if all wkstns:
since this cropped up on patching i would try for free support on this from MS. did exchange get patched as well? maybe it should...what else common to all pc's has changed lately?.
but if this is only happening on one patched box-? then i would look at size of mailbox, has it gotten too large? i would try a brand new mailbox on the bad pc. i would consider that communications with the server might cause corruption. i would compare outlook settings on that pc to another w/o the problem. i would search 'corrupt mailbox Outlook 2000' at to get a feel for what corrupts mailboxes. that would give me ideas about more tests to make. good luck
