Windows 2000 takes a long tine starting
The event log has the following error message: The distributed link tracking client service hung on starting.
I am having trouble finding out what is causing the problem

I supposed it has something to do with the shared folders in various machines which were integrated in your DFS Link which are offline when you start the server.

The problem is that you have a service running that you don't need. Set the DLT service to manual. Here's more:

I'm assuming this is a workstation, not a server. Distributed link tracking is a service that actually tracks links to files on NTFS partitions. It is supposed to make it possible for clients to find files even if they have been moved. However, it creates a lot of overhead on networks and Microsoft actually recommends disabling the server service in Windows 2000 (in Windows 2003 it is disabled by default). My guess is that the service has been disabled on your server(s), but the workstationis still trying to run the client software. Go into the Services control panel on your workstation and change the startup setting for the service to "Disabled" so it won't even try to start up. See MS Knowledgebase article 312403 if you want to read more on this issue. Hope this helps!
