Distribution Lists

By bbelay ·
I want to send an email to a distribution list that 50 members, and make the name of the recipient the receivers name or email address instead of the distribution list. The reason why I want to do this is to make the receivers fell that they are getting the message not just because they are a part of a distribution list, and get their attention.

use your favirite shell and write a script like:

DISTRO="bob@comain.com mary@another.com..."

for NAME in $DISTRO; do
mail $NAME <message_file_name
done

DISTRO could be read out of a file instead of updating the script. Add whatever you need to the mail command. Adjust the syntax for your choice of shell.

Go to www.greatcircle.com and get majordomo. It will do all of this for you. And it is written in Perl so you can see how they did it if you just want to make your own scripts.

This software is free, as of last check of web site, but does have a licensing agreement. See web site for complete details. It is similar to the Apache license. You can use it, just don't charge for it.

Setting it up takes a couple hours (compiling and configuring) but is worth it. It is a simple and straight forward system to manage.
