DNS On Red Hat Linux 6.2

By teo ·
I type nslookup at the terminal windows and showed the error message "cannot find server name ....."

Can I know what is the problem ? It it due to the dns conf files ?

If yes, how do I fix it ?

Thank you

First of all, please chekc that the DNS sevrer you have defined in the network configuration is correct. If yes, than check the /etc/resolve.conf and /etc/hosts files. reslove.conf contains the DSN sequence for the nslookup, this file contains the FQDN and the IP address. Also check named.local for the A record of the local machine.

The error message means that it can't successfully reverse lookup the IP address of the (first) server in the /etc/resolv.conf file. I think nslookup uses gethostbyaddr which can look in /etc/hosts as well as DNS. If nslookup is running on the same machine as DNS, check /etc/hosts, the nsswitch file (if you have it) and the IP of the host. If not, then I bet some server isn't aauthoritative for the IN-ADDR.ARPA zone your server IP would be in.

not having enough info here.

You might want to try netconf (GUI, nice) to check on conf files. Check /etc/resolv.conf, nsswitch.conf, hosts. If named daemon is running on the same host, check if process is running. If it does not, try to ping the DNS server if you get any reply or not.
