Do you use an IM app? What flavor?

    by dmambo ·

For the past few months, my daughter has been pestering me to install AOL AIM at home because, apparently, a telephone, e-mail and a very nice bicycle are not good enough tools to communicate with today’s high school crowd.

After receiving assurances that she’ll stick to chatting with actual people that she knows personnally and again reviewing the rules of the road of the internet super-highway, I gave in.

Now, right from the start I knew that AIM wasn’t going anywhere near my machine as I won’t allow all the bundled spyware. So I researched some alternatives and narrowed the list to Trillian, GAIM, and Miranda. I checked a few forums and had some suspicions about Trillian and it’s update feature, and I eventually settled on Miranda. One reason I liked it is that is ONLY an IM app, no other features.

So my question is what app do you use and why? Any complaints about the “popular” IM programs like AIM, MSN or Yahoo Messenger?

BTW, Red Sox sstart a 5-game series against the Yankees tonight. This should make or break the season. GO RED SOX!!!!!!!!!

ICQ back in the day, and it’s still a solid program. AIM – not much tho – don’t really like it’s invasiveness, never used yahoo. Have used Trillian, that was ok. Currently use MSN and Windows messenger – and have used it on and off for years. I use them for work.

I use GAIM because it connects with most everything and doesn’t come with all the extra “garbage”.

AOL’s IM has always had tons of holes in the past. Don’t know if they have learned not to write them in nowadays. I stopped using it years ago.

ICQ was the same way years ago. Always had people trying to hack it. I quit using that too basically.

MSN Messenger is okay, but some of it’s features I don’t like.

I use YM the most. It lets you be invisible to selected people, as well as block everyone but people you allow. Plus, it has voice and text and video capability.

I find the newer versions are more bulky and slow, but what’s new about that with software nowadays…right?

        Try either GAIM or Miranda

They both work across the popular protocols and they’re pretty lean. Miranda hardly raises a blip on CPU utilization.

Because I now will be IM’ing my kid, I signed up for an AOL screen name, but that doesn’t mean that I have to use their bloatware!

      Wild Card race GB
      Chicago 72 48 .600 —
      Minnesota 70 50 .583 2.0
      Boston 69 50 .580 2.5

Chicago plays Minnesota this weekend. Go Twins!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I have more exclamation marks, so I win 🙂 )

Your logic is flawed for a couple of reasons.

        1) If the Sox win all the games, the Spankees will be farther out of the wild card race than the Sox are now.

        2-10gazillion) I hate the Yankees.

        Now be nice.

I’ll root for the Twins all weekend, if you root for the Red Sox. Deal?

…if Red Sox or Yankees win, as long as the Twins get in to the play offs 🙂 Being nasty is least I can do for ma home team 🙂

Since, I have to be nice, I will come to the subject : IM. I do not use it much, but now and then I would use MSN messenger. We don’t use IM at work so…. I am not that informed on the whole IM genre.

… the AAA farm club for the Yankees. We get to catch the big $$$ players sent downfor rehab.

The season ends for me with the Governours Cup (AAA championship).

Real baseball, $5 tickets, dime a dog nite regularly … what more could ya want?

      AIM, YIM, MSN, mIRC.

Been trying GAIM, but it has a nasty habit of (a) not logging in to MSN reliably and then (b) exiting with an error.

Also, I have to give an ID for the IRC network I’m on, and GAIM doesn’t do that well.

Other than that, I prefer it to the others.
