Document Compare

Norton SystemWorks for 9x has a feature for comparing documents of any type, side by side, line by line, and what is added/deleted in color code. NSW for 2k/XP does not have this. No idea why Symantec keeps removing things.
I need to find a program that is just like that document comparer for my XP system. A standalone FREEBIE if possible.
Word’s document compare is VERY CONFUSING.
Please tell me what is out there.
