Domain Prep screws up Exchange

By ccthompson ·
I got a windows 2000 domain controller with Exchange 2000 installed on it. Got a new Box with Windows 2003 Server installed on it. If I prep the domain, will it screw up Exchange 2000?

If so, would another route be to upgrade exchange 2000 to exchange 2003 then upgrade the domain?

Thanks for any input!

I have heard that Exchange server 2000 works fine on a windows 2003 domain as long as the 2000 exchange server had not previously been apart of a 2000 active directory domain. You should have to install exchange 2000 while the 2003 domain already exists. You then could move mailboxes and the like form your other exchange server.

Thanks for your post, although exchange is already on the 2000 domain controller. Have not preped the domain for 2003. Just trying to find out the best route to go.

What if I would install Exchange 2003 on the new server, then move the mailboxes? But to install Exchange 2003, you would still maybe have to prep the domain and screw things up.

Why cant M$ make things work together?

Although you can run Exchange 2000 in a Windows 2003 domain, there are some special schema changes that have to be made to the Windows 2000 schema to avoid some potential problems when you upgrade (there's a script available from MS for this, however; go to the MS Knowledgebase web site and look up how to upgrade from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003). And, it cannot run on a Windows 2003 server, only on a Windows 2000 server in a Windows 2003 domain.

I think what you will need to do is install Windows 2003 and upgrade AD, leaving the Exchange server on Windows 2000; then upgrade Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003; then upgrade the OS on the Exchange server from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. This is how I am doing it at one of my client sites at the present time. So far, everything has worked out fine.

Hope this helps!

Yes, it can cause some problems. Please see my answer to your "New server" post of a few days ago, with a reference to a MS knowledgebase article that tells you how to get around this.

Thanks again, following your instruction, can I just leave exchange 2000 as is for now, then when I install exchange 2003, simply move the mailbox? You can send me a private message, as I am going to close this question. Thanks again.
