DOS/WinXP incomplete boot after Autoruns (my fault)

By webmaster ·

I unchecked wa-a-a-y too many items in Autoruns.Upon boot failure, I tried doing F8, but it wouldn't come up. So I tried re-installing WinXP. Now access is denied because WinXP cannot finish installing. The DOS and XP startup windows alternate.

Is there ANYthing I can do to save my poor laptop?

Addendum to incomplete boot (above)

Aloha, again...

In the DOS version of the Recovery Console, I tried enabling the services, but am not sure whether some of them should be service_boot, system, auto, or demand. Is there a list somewhere? Or can I go into the same DOS Recovery Console on another XP computer to compare?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I'll be sure to check out the link. Thanks.

What I wound up doing was sacrificing everything. I ran 'fixmbr' from the DOS version of Recovery Console. The report said that the boot was messed up (I forget the exact wording), but that I could mess it up even more if I went ahead and fixed it. At that point I didn't figure I could do much more damage, so I told it to go ahead and do its thing.

Afterward, I restarted and ran my WinXP installation disk again. I did not take any action on the partitions. When I restarted, WinXP opened, and all was right with the world...

As expected, most of my documents were gone, but I have some backups.

In regard to Autoruns: probably a great program, but use it wisely. ; )

Thanks again for the link. I'll take a look to see what I could/should have done. : )
