Dot Matrix Printer

Hello,
I am using a dot matrix Printer Epson LX 1050+ for my regular office printing.

I mainly use Microsoft Word, Excel softwares on my Windows XP System.

The speed I get from the printer is very very low (about 1-2 pages per minite). Is there any way I can improve the speed?

I understand that converting to Ascii is an option.. Can you explain how and why that makes a difference? Can you recommend any softwares (freeware/properiory) that do so?
