doubt in office 97

By Venkatramaiah.sudarsan ·
HI,

Today one user showed me a file which opens twice with the name filname:1 and filename:2 and when a file is closed the other file is also closed automatically.. I tried to find a solution in microsoft site but it is of no use..

It says unregister excel and then register again.. But nothing happened even after that

can anyone give a lead pls?

Close one of the files and save it. What probably happened is someone clicked on Windows>New window

My actual problem is opening of 2 files with the same name.. For eg if i double click on a file named a.xls, two file names are getting opened as a.xls:1 and a.xls:2 both of them having the same contents.. If one file is closed, the other file gets closed automatically.

This can happen when files become cross-linked. Close all applications and run scandisk.

Yes, that is what happens when you create a New Window view.
You can close down one copy by going to Window> Arrange.
Then close one of the views.
These are not two files, but two views of the same file.

Go to Window Arrange and choose Tile. You will see both views. Click the Close X in the upper right corner of one of the views. Maximize the remaining window. Save and close the file. It will now open normally.
