      Get rid of “Normal” style

      by jglenncrp ·

Word’s default “Normal” style controls all other styles and can drive authors up the wall – they change Normal and all other styles (by default based on Normal) change, too.
Avoid this ripple effect by selecting (for a new style) FORMAT > STYLE > NEW. Find the BASED ON field; the word NORMAL is shown. Click on the selection arrow to the right, then press the “(” (open parenthesis) key to display (no style). This breaks the link to Normal. Both Normal and the new style are independent of each other.

I’ve been a Word user since the early nineties. This article was a nice mixture of new stuff and stuff I already knew.

      Thanks
