Dropped my laptop

By bob.meier ·
The computer will completely boot up and run but I hear the fans pulsing (faster/slower) then the computer shuts down after about 30 seconds. Any idea's?

check the RAM

Its not clear to me from your description if you are getting video, and if the system boots all the way into Windows.

The RAM may have bounced loose. The hard drive may have froze up, and the internal video cable may have come unseated.

You may try reseating the RAM, and removing the hard drive and seeing if you get any video.

You also may see if the video will work with an external monitor.

My first guess is

by Dumphrey In reply to Dropped my laptop

that the cpu cooler has come loose and its shutting down to save itself. The fans would rev and slow I guess depending on its current reading. I would also check to make sure all fans are tightly plugged in. A good time to clean out dust etc while you have it all appart.

cpu cooler

once I have opened up the computer how much do I need to disassemble to determine if CPU cooler has come loose and is this a solder connection?

Disassembly technique depends on the make / model.

Can you tell us what make / model this laptop is?

Dell Precision M60

I can get it open to the point I have the display separated and can see harddrive. From there I will need some guidance.

Dell is not my chosen beast of burden, so I'm not the best person to advise.

But this link is:

If the laptop is in warranty, I would bring it to an authorized service center, as if you opened the laptop, it probably would void the warranty. If not it, could not hurt to open it up and re-seat all the connections and see if anything was jarred loose, depending on your comfort level. (As a side note, laptops are very fragile once you get past the outer casing. It does not take much force to break a tab or crack the LCD screen while trying to remove it from the case taking it apart.) It sounds like it could be shutting down due to a thermal problem (fans slow then fast).
