Dual booting win98 and winXP Pro. Help!

By mullanj21 ·
I am running win98 SE, with just about enough system requirements for an evaluation copy of WinXP Professional to be tried out. But i would like to know if i can dual boot both operating systems, and if possible any problems i might encounter. Anyhelp on this is really appreciated. I am starting from scratch so any help at all is welcome. Thanks. John.

Dual booting win98 and winXP Pro. Help!

John,

First, it always works best, especially if you are just evaluating XP, to install the second OS on it's own partition / logical drive.

That way, you are at minimum risk of loosing anything on your W98 installation.
(It will be much easier to return to W9

Next, I would want at least 2GB of free space for XP, and at least 256MB of system RAM.

The last thing to do before starting an XP install, is to verify that ALL hardware is supported.
Problem devices include:
Modems,
Sound cards,
Video cards,
Printers,
Scanners

When you install XP, choose custom options whenever available, and be sure to manually set the folder that XP will be installed in.

Then, the installation should proceed and assist you in setting upa dual-boot configuration.

You can find a lot of good information on the boot.ini file and bootcfg command posted at www.systeminternals.com

One additional caveat, do not attempt to single install any application software.
You should install any software separately for each version of Windows.
Most software adds DLL files to the Windows folders, and adds keys to the system registry.
Trying to use software that was installed in the same folder for both versions of Windows is just askingfor problems.
All the more reason to have separate drives for each OS.

I agree with Chas on most everything. One thing to remember is that you need Win98 to be in FAT16 for a dual boot to work. If it is Fat32 you will have problems. Also, in doing this you will have to keep the Win98 partition under 2Gig.
