duplicate files

By maggiectech ·
have a couple of clients that when they try to delete pictures or emails that they have downloaded from the web, always wind up with extra copies of what they try to delete

any clue to this would help I believe a program is making the copies, but I can't figure out which one is doing this

Did you solve this problem?

by mariahswind In reply to duplicate files

This is happening to my dad right now, he's using XP.I just started using XP so I don't know if there is something that does this or not. He thought it was a virus at first but it wasn't. So if you are any wiser than when you posted please let me know what you foudn out! Kind regards mariahswind

Two points here

by Deadly Ernest In reply to duplicate files

First - everything you see in a web page is first downloaded to your system in the browser cache folder, or the browser temporary folder, varies with browsers. The files get downloaded then displayed.

Second - the only times I've seen this type of behaviour is when the recurring file/s are part of a particular trojan or virus and it has a hidden file that keeps propagating itself after being deleted. Most common with those autodial trojans that have your system automatically dial their premium numbers.

To get rid of this you need to find the base program and delete it. Sometimes a Restore will work in Windows, but not often. Do a check of all files / folders changed or created since a date before this started, and have a close look at them.

ive seen it before without input from a virus. This is a bug in xp sp1 which can be corrected with installing sp2.If you have sp2 installed i would go with the trojan.
