Problem isn’t Macrovision — that only applies to
      analog dubs (e.g., to VCR).

As you may know, there is a digital copy-protection
system on many DVDs (newer movies iirc are more
complicated in this respect) and the DVD decoder
boards, even for PC applications, are required to be
      compliant with it.

Hacking around this isn’t likely to be something you
want to discuss on an open board like this. I am
presuming you are doing this for ‘fair use’ and not to
make warez or copies for all your friends…

The courts have ruled that it is legal to make copies for your personal use. This allows you to preserve the original and let the kids destroy the copy.

USING ANY SOFTWARE TO REPRODUCE AND SELL MOVIES WILL MOST LIKELY GET YOU ARRESTED.

DVD Decrypter will rip a DVD to VBO files.

DVD2one will take those files and reduce the content to fit on a DVD.

Nero 5 or 6 will take the files created by DVD2one and burn the movie.

Nero 6 Suite also has several programs to recode and reduce a dual layer movie to a single layer disk. In the process of doing this reduction you will loose video quality.

Any of this information is avaible from a few Google searches.
