You can't do it with only Exchange and Outlook 2000 if Outlook is closed. There are a couple of options though. The first is to write your own application that would sit in the system tray. The other is to try a program e-mail checking program that has already been written and see if it will work for you. The one I quickly found was at www.zdnet.com in their downloads section. It is called Mail Watcher 3.0. It is freeware and works in 95,98, and NT. It works on a POP account, but since Exchangeallows POP connections I don't really see this as a problem.

I'm respectful of the thought in the first answer but I don't believe that Mailwatcher is the correct answer. While it is possible to access Exchange via POP3, I wouldn't think you really want to do that from a security perspective.

I've found that it really hasn't been a problem to keep Outlook open and watch for the little mail icon in the corner.

Another option for those that really need to know would be to set up their pager or cell phone address as an alternate recipient. I've donethat when I'm on the road a lot and it works quite well.

Why do you have the need to close Outlook in the first place? I don't believe there is a tool out there that can do exactly what you are asking about. Outlook doesn't have that option like GroupWise does (GroupWise Notify). Why not just keep Outlook open and minimized?
