Weekend was ups and downs

by jdclyde In reply to Edited out

First of all, it was not my weekend to have the boys, BUT their godfathers son (my best bud since we were 2) was having an over night Birthday party. So I got to go pick up the boys and take them to the party. Eight 11 to 14 year olds, running and screaming, what fun! About 1:30am I called it quits, went home and got some sleep.

The EX had insisted that she would pick them up from the party, even though I offered to save her the drive. At the last minute she told them to tell me that I would pick them up and could have them for the day. (Jays Outdoors was having their "sidewalk sale") So I picked up the boys, and we drove out to Clare.

Got Thing One a used compound bow all setup, for about $180. Got Thing Two a pair of nice boots for $99. They didn't having anything in my size left, so nothing for me!

Dropped them back off at the loveshack, and then mowed the lawn.

Sunday, got the boys early so we could play a round of golf. Thing one beat me by a stroke (yes, he is grounded again!) Thing two hasn't been going as often, and it shows in his game. When it is a spir of the moment thing of "lets go play a round", he has been passing. When it gets him out of his mothers house, he says yes everytime. B-)

Did some shopping for their goodies for the week, then went home and played video games with them until about 1am.

What a grand weekend.

The weekend

by Tig2 In reply to Edited out

Any one who knows me, knows how I spend my weekend. We walked- 10 miles on Saturday and 6 on Sunday. My team usually meets at 8:00 a.m. but we were watching the weather forecasts and decided to get there early. We got 2 miles in before the team showed up both days so we were able to leave early. This was a good thing because it was nearly 100 degrees both days. And the humidity was nearly 70%. Breathing wasn't the easiest thing to do!

I also got my second pair of shoes ordered. Need two pair for the 3 Day- that way I can switch between them. This week I get to break in the new ones.

The rest of the weekend we just tried to get caught up- nothing gets done any more. When did life get so busy?

Don't forget to take your water when you walk- especially in the heat. And some kind of sport drink- replace the eletrolytes that you will lose.

Check out Sports Authority or REI

You can get powdered Gatorade- I use it if I have no other choice. It is easy to carry and you can mix it to your taste. I find the prebottled to be WAY too sweet. One of my team buys an eight ounce of the premade and cuts it with an equal amount of water.

There are a number of brands on the market. My favourite is something called Smart Water. It is water with electrolytes and no sugar or flavour. It tastes just like water. I can get it for about $1.79 for a 1.5 litre bottle. Since I have refillable bottles, that works well for me.

The Sparkling Water has a certain amount of salt in it but you don't get the potassium bicarbonate, calcium chloride or magnesium chloride that you also need. An electrolyte replacement is essential especially as you walk longer distances.

Edited just for you!

Apple Juice

by JamesRL In reply to Edited out

Way back when I was a competitive runner (late 70s early 80s) I read an interesting study in Runners world that suggested that by mixing apple juice 50/50 with plain water, you could get a good palatable substitute for Gatorade. I did it myself for years, it helped me through a double metric century (200 kms) on a bicycle.

Apple juice has more potassium and less sodium than gatorade.

Just for fun I googled it and found this:

http://www.davedraper.com/forum/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/54354/Main/54354

They suggest 60/40 water/apple juice.

The nice thing about apple juice is that you can get it just about anywhere, and its cheap.

The ratio is important

by JamesRL In reply to Edited out

Too much juice and your body will slow down its absorbtion while it handle the carbs. Too little juice and you wont get enough potassium and sodium.

50/50 is what I did....

Let me know how your walk goes

by Tig2 In reply to Edited out

I know that for me the first big milestone was the five mile. We just got back from walking 6.

Saturday is the 18 mile all day marathon. Followed by a 15 mile all day marathon. At least we've done a 15 before- just not right after an 18!

I'll post Sunday night and let you know if an old fat woman can really do this thing!

Remember- stay hydrated. Over 6 miles, you should be drinking approximately 2 litres of fluid- 1 litre water, 1 litre electrolyte replacement. I know you can do this!
